How do you explain to someone that riding horses is exercise for you?

    Invite them out to ride and have them post the trot with no stirrups for 15 minutes! Of course it is a workout to control a horses speed and direction with only your hands and legs! Your thighs are used for directing the horse and making shallow turns and your arms are used for guidance in more direct turns, especially difficult over jumps!
    Some people will NEVER understand… :)

    yeah i agree with heather on this one. Some people will just never understand. I had a PE teacher for a semester, who’s husband trained reining horses, so she understood… but trust me, all my other PE teachers didn’t! haha. even if you explain it the best you can, some people just won’t care.

    Depending on your teacher, you may just need to explain posting, or some other part of riding that is aerobic, and they’ll understand. My PE teacher didn’t understand either, but I explained posting, and voila! I had no more problems.

    u get laods of muscles and ur doing alot more work then just runing around and ur useing alot of msucles

    i think wat u should do is bring ur horse and make him sit on it and amke him do a riising trot he will never not belive u again =D

    Because, not only are you burning calories, increasing your heart rate and making your muscles work, you are also in control of the animal you are riding.

    If your PE teacher can play tennis, ask them to play tennis with you. Inform them, that they are going to be giving you directions on what you need to do. Move left, right, how fast you go to the ball, when to swing, when to stop moving, where to turn, how much your to turn, etc. All the while, they also have to be moving and going after the ball as well. (it also helps to have a couple kids on the court too (aka, navigating around an arena with people in it)

    Because, not only are you controlling your own body, but you are now controlling another’s. You have to mentally be aware of everything that is going on around you - and account not only your reactions, but those of your mount’s.

    People who have never ridden horses tend to think that all the rider is doing is sitting on the horse, that the horse is doing all the work.

    Myself, my preferred “explanation” is to put ‘em up on a horse on a lunge line and put them through about fifteen minutes of brisk trotting. That’s usually enough to convince even the most thick-headed person that there’s a lot more to this horse-riding stuff than just sitting and letting the horse do all the work. Many will be crying for mercy after just a couple of circuits at the trot.

    tell them it is cardio as well as abs and legs and some arm.

    its like doing squats, dung bells, cardio for posting trot, ab crunches for sitting trot cuz u have to flex your abs the whole time unless its western..also works your inner thy, posture, and quads.

    fact: a jokey losses more calories then flag football players

    I hate it when people say that riding is not a sport i know after my very first lesson i could not walk afterwords

    invite them to ride even if u just go to a trail place cause just stilling in a saddle is work but deff walk trot and canter are hard they work your leg muscles and arms as well as ur back and abs i mean my calves are like made of steal it is crazy people always ask how i get them so pretty and toned and i say riding but no one believes me that it is true although they know i ride

    have you explained that it is much more than just sitting?

    You have to walk out to get the horse, brush him down (that can entail lots of stretching, especially if he is tall). put the saddle on (which can be weight lifting if you ride western). If your longe first, that might be a lot of cardio if you have to chase after your horse like I do. Just sitting on a horse might be easy enough, but a lot of posting will work your thighs more than a gazillion longes. If your horse is lazy, it’s a work out using your leg to keep him going.

    then you have to unsaddle, brush again. And don’t forget cleaning stalls and having to move hay bales around.

    Riding is a full body, aerobic work out with emphasis on the core muscles.

    Workout begins—-grooming/tacking (our light stretching warm up), lunging (similar to an easy jog warm up, accelerating heart rate), mounting (like doing step work/ stair master), posting (pilates)….

    It would make an interesting debate which you can prove by wearing a heart moniter.

    If you cannot actually arrange for your teacher to take a lunge lesson, I would go for wearing a heart monitor, videoing your riding process, and explain to her the details of the riding process. You can read up on exercising for riding and share that with your teacher as well. Of course, you need to do any of this in a respectful and polite manner. I know obvious, but it helps me to be reminded.

    I agree with the other answers about making your teacher ride, but my version is more evil. Bwahahahaha!!!
    Lunge line lesson plan for PE teacher: 10 minutes posting trot w/ stirrups, 10 minute posting trot w/o stirrups, 10 minute sitting trot, and 15 minutes of 2 pt. That should cure ‘em of thinking it’s easy.

    well when your ride a horse you really have to squeeze your thighs so you get balance, when you jump. sometimes when you are in a fast trot or canter you can feel your stomach muscles kind of hurting and that is because your body is not used to that and you are working your muscles. but no matter what your gym teacher says its exercise and you know it! hope i could help.
